Expanding Access to Healthcare: a Community-based Approach

JANUARY 2011 — One year ago, a devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. Then cholera broke out in October. Drawing on our long experience in Haiti and the USAID-funded CHAMP Project's focus on strengthening the delivery of community-based services, FHI is working to meet the growing needs of Haiti's most vulnerable people.

Responding to the Cholera Epidemic

hands holding waterJANUARY 2011—Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. Clean water. A seemingly simple recipe for a liquid that is essential to health, to life. We all have a right to it, yet even before last year's tragic earthquake nearly 4 of 10 Haitians lacked access to clean water and only one in five had access to sanitation, according to the 2010 Human Development Report.

Strengthening Community-based Organizations

JANUARY 2011—Despite the devastating earthquake one year ago and the outbreak of cholera in October, FHI and its partners are making progress on a key goal of the CHAMP Project—to establish a network of community service delivery points (PDSC) in Haiti where people can receive integrated and comprehensive health care and related services.

Through the USAID-funded Community Health and AIDS Mitigation Project (CHAMP), FHI and its partners are increasing the access of people living with HIV/AIDS and vulnerable families to a full spectrum of health and social services at the community level, including palliative care.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also supports FHI's integrated palliative care work in Haiti.

With support from the Global Fund, FHI is supporting the rapid expansion of HIV treatment services in Haiti and strengthening health systems to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS.

FHI Expands Access to Contraception and Integrates Family Planning with HIV/AIDS Services

  •     With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development and local partners, FHI is working in Haiti to increase use of family planning among those who wish to space or limit births. We are training providers on contraceptive technology and counseling skills and increasing availability of family planning methods.

  •     Integrating family planning and HIV/AIDS services has the potential to maximize the effectiveness and impact of both services by providing health care that addresses clients' dual risks of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy. In Haiti, we are providing technical assistance to integrate family planning into an HIV care and prevention program.

Haiti Relief Toolkit

Very soon after the earthquake that hit Haiti in January 2010, the Knowledge for Health project at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Communications Programs developed the Haiti Relief Toolkit as a one-stop source for technical and practical information for health workers, health policy makers, program managers, and others engaged in emergency response. The resources in the toolkit include manuals, checklists, briefs, teaching and training materials, and job aids in English, French and Creole.  FHI contributed material to the toolkit and coordinated the technical review and recent updating of its contents and structure.
