Driver's license

All drivers must of held their license for at least 1 year. If your driving license printed with non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) it must be accompanied by an International driving licence. For driving licenses from countries not part of the international driving license treaty (e.g. China), please also bring an official translation of the license in English along with your original license

Age restrictions

The minimum age for hiring a car rental in Haiti is 21 years of age for most vehicle groups. Some of our car rental categories require a minimum age of 25. You can find out more information during the online booking process.

Payment Methods

Driving Tips

Route 1 runs from Port-au-Prince to Cap Haitien along the coast, while Route 3 runs between the same destinations through the middle of the country. Roads are generally poorly maintained and off the main routes there are many small tracks that can be hazardous.

Tips for safer driving in Haiti

  • Exercise extreme caution, many other drivers are not aware of local driving laws
  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road but be aware many drivers cross into the opposite side of the road to avoid potholes and debris
  • Drink driving in Haiti is illegal, but as many drivers do drink and drive be especially cautious at night and at festival times
  • Plan before you travel, consult security advise in specific areas and check for road closures and adverse weather conditions

The colossal Citadelle Henry Christophe is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the largest fortresses in the Americas. Over 20,000 workers built it in the 1800s, its size and historical importance has made the structure a national symbol for Haitians. The nearby Sans-Souci Palace is also a UNESCO world heritage site. Though it is now in ruins it is still a remarkable site that easily evokes how magnificent the palace once was. The Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien in Port-au-Prince is dedicated to Haitian independence and the history and culture of the nation. The architecture of the museum is stunning and houses some of the most important historical artefacts in the Caribbean. The building of St. Louis King of France Cathedral was completed in 1901 and is now a principal landmark in the town of Jeremie.

Just a few miles to the north of Jeremie is the Anse d'Azur, a beautiful sandy bay that features many caves and a sunken German U-boat! Bassin Bleu is a natural water site of 3 cobalt blue basins connected by beautiful waterfalls. Hidden in the mountains 12 km north of Jacmel, these pools make a fantastical swimming spot. Located on the country's southern peninsula Pic Macaya National Park features cloud forests, two incredibly tall peaks and sensational wildlife. If you intend to hike through the park as with many of the sites in Haiti we highly recommend hiring a travel guide. The remarkable Grotte Marie-Jeanne is around 45 minutes on Route 25 north of Port Salut. The caves contain 36 known chambers and are some of the most impressive in the Caribbean.
